Deep Dive

Each Method Explained

A closer look at the advantages, drawbacks, and practical considerations for every consumption method.

Smoking (Flower & Pre-Rolls)

Onset: 1 -- 5 minutesDuration: 1 -- 3 hours

The most traditional method. Combustion releases cannabinoids and terpenes almost instantly through the lungs. Effects are felt within minutes and peak around 30 minutes. Pre-rolls offer convenience; loose flower allows you to control the amount. Drawback: combustion produces tar and irritants.

Advantages

  • Fast onset for easy dose control
  • Full-spectrum terpene expression
  • Wide product variety

Considerations

  • Lung irritation from combustion
  • Strong odor
  • Difficult to dose precisely

Vaping

Onset: 1 -- 5 minutesDuration: 1 -- 3 hours

Heats cannabis oil or flower to a temperature that releases cannabinoids without combustion. Generally considered less harsh on the lungs than smoking. Cartridges and disposable pens are the most popular formats. Produces less odor than smoking.

Advantages

  • Less harsh than combustion
  • Discreet and portable
  • Consistent dosing per puff

Considerations

  • Battery-dependent devices
  • Oil cartridge quality varies
  • Not as full-spectrum as flower

Edibles

Onset: 30 -- 90 minutesDuration: 4 -- 8 hours

Processed through the digestive system and liver, converting THC to the more potent 11-hydroxy-THC. Effects take much longer to appear but last significantly longer. New York standard serving is 5mg. Gummies, chocolates, and beverages are the most common formats.

Advantages

  • Precise milligram dosing
  • Long-lasting effects
  • No lung exposure

Considerations

  • Delayed onset leads to overconsumption risk
  • Effects can be very intense
  • Harder to titrate in real-time

Tinctures

Onset: 15 -- 45 minutes (sublingual)Duration: 4 -- 6 hours

Liquid cannabis extracts administered under the tongue using a dropper. Sublingual absorption bypasses the digestive system for faster onset than edibles. Swallowing the tincture routes it through the liver like an edible. Allows precise milligram control drop by drop.

Advantages

  • Most precise dosing method
  • Faster than edibles
  • Discreet and odorless

Considerations

  • Taste can be earthy or bitter
  • Effects moderate compared to inhalation
  • Requires holding under tongue

Topicals

Onset: 15 -- 45 minutesDuration: 2 -- 4 hours (localized)

Creams, balms, and lotions infused with cannabinoids applied directly to the skin. Topicals target localized areas without producing psychoactive effects because cannabinoids do not reach the bloodstream in significant amounts. Used primarily for muscle soreness, joint discomfort, and skin conditions.

Advantages

  • No psychoactive effects
  • Targeted localized relief
  • Beginner-friendly with zero intoxication risk

Considerations

  • No full-body effects
  • Variable absorption by skin type
  • Effects limited to application area

Concentrates

Onset: Seconds to 2 minutesDuration: 1 -- 3 hours

Extracted cannabis products with THC concentrations of 60-90%. Includes wax, shatter, live resin, rosin, and diamonds. Consumed through dabbing (a heated surface) or specialized vaporizers. Produces the most intense and immediate effects of any consumption method.

Advantages

  • Extremely potent and fast-acting
  • Rich terpene profiles in live products
  • Small amount needed

Considerations

  • Too potent for beginners
  • Requires specialized equipment
  • Easy to overconsume

Our Recommendation

Best Starting Points for Beginners

If you are new to cannabis, the safest entry points offer predictable dosing and manageable intensity.

Low-dose edible

A 2.5-5mg gummy gives you precise control, no lung exposure, and time to assess effects before redosing.

Tincture

Sublingual drops allow micro-adjustments. Start with 2.5mg, wait 30 minutes, and increase gradually.

Small pre-roll

Take one or two puffs, then wait 10 minutes. Inhalation gives the fastest feedback loop for new users.
