Edibles Dosing Guide

Edibles hit differently than smoking -- literally. They take longer to kick in, last longer, and can be significantly more potent. Here is how to dose safely.

New York Standard

Why 5mg Is the Standard Serving

New York's Office of Cannabis Management set 5mg of THC as one standard serving for adult-use edibles. This is not arbitrary -- it reflects research showing that 5mg produces noticeable but manageable effects for most adults without prior tolerance.

Every edible product sold at Purple Buds clearly labels the THC content per serving and per package. A package containing 50mg total with 10 servings means each piece contains 5mg -- one serving.

Dosing Tiers

Five Levels of Edible Dosing

Effects are approximate and vary by individual. These ranges represent general consensus from clinical research and dispensary experience.

1

Microdose

1 -- 2.5 mg THC

Best for: First-time users, those seeking subtle relief

Mild mood lift, slight relaxation. Most people feel functional and clear-headed. Often used for focus, mild anxiety, or daily wellness.

This is where every beginner should start.

2

Low Dose

2.5 -- 5 mg THC

Best for: Beginners with some experience, casual users

Noticeable relaxation, mild euphoria, enhanced sensory perception. Social and creative activities feel enhanced. This is one standard NY serving.

New York's regulated serving size is 5mg for good reason.

3

Moderate Dose

5 -- 15 mg THC

Best for: Regular consumers with established tolerance

Strong euphoria, impaired coordination, altered perception of time. Not recommended for public settings or first-time users.

Wait at least 2 hours before considering a second dose.

4

High Dose

15 -- 30 mg THC

Best for: Experienced consumers only

Intense psychoactive effects, significant impairment, strong body sensations. May cause anxiety in those with low tolerance.

This range is not appropriate for occasional users.

5

Very High Dose

30+ mg THC

Best for: Medical patients or very experienced users with high tolerance

Very strong effects that can last 8+ hours. High likelihood of adverse effects for those without established tolerance.

Never start here. This range requires significant prior experience.

Timing

Onset: 30 to 90 Minutes

Unlike smoking, which delivers THC to your bloodstream through the lungs in seconds, edibles must pass through your digestive system and liver. This process -- called first-pass metabolism -- converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a compound that crosses the blood-brain barrier more effectively.

This is why edibles often feel stronger than the same milligram amount smoked. It is also why onset takes 30 to 90 minutes and occasionally up to 2 hours. The single most common edible mistake: taking a second dose because the first "isn't working yet."

Duration

Duration: 4 to 8 Hours

Effects typically peak between 1.5 and 3 hours after onset and gradually taper. Total duration ranges from 4 to 8 hours depending on dose, tolerance, metabolism, and body composition.

At higher doses, residual effects like grogginess or mild relaxation can persist into the following morning. Plan your evening accordingly -- do not drive or operate machinery until you are certain effects have fully subsided.

Variables

Factors That Affect Your Experience

The same dose can produce different effects in different people -- or even in the same person on different days. Here is why.

Body weight: Larger bodies may require slightly higher doses, but this varies significantly between individuals.
Metabolism: Faster metabolisms may process edibles more quickly, leading to shorter but sometimes more intense effects.
Food intake: Eating edibles on an empty stomach can intensify and accelerate onset. A light meal beforehand provides a more predictable experience.
Tolerance: Regular cannabis users metabolize THC differently. A 5mg dose for a daily user feels nothing like 5mg for a first-timer.
Individual biology: Genetics affect how your liver processes THC. Some people are naturally more sensitive regardless of experience level.

Safety First

What to Do If You Take Too Much

Overconsumption is uncomfortable but not dangerous for otherwise healthy adults. No one has fatally overdosed on cannabis. If you or someone you know has consumed too much, here is what to do.

Stay calm

Remind yourself this is temporary. The discomfort will pass, usually within 1 to 3 hours.

Hydrate

Drink water. Avoid alcohol, which can intensify effects.

Find a safe, comfortable space

Lie down if possible. Dim lighting and quiet environments help.

Try black pepper

Chewing or smelling black peppercorns may help reduce anxiety thanks to the terpene caryophyllene.

Distract yourself

Put on a familiar, calming show or music. Light sensory input can help ground you.

Call for help if needed

If symptoms feel severe, call 911 or Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222. You will not get in trouble.
